Freelance/Contra UX Researcher

During this 5 month project we will spend time researching and developing a human-centred solution to our main question: how can we better support emerging maker businesses through the development of communities that are not space reliant?

We are looking to recruit a freelance UX researcher to scope the research process, lead fieldwork, conduct interviews and perform desk research. Design Researchers must be prepared to plan and lead fieldwork to discover insights first-hand. Candidates need a strong foundation in qualitative methods and contextual inquiry that has been further developed through the integration of digital methods.

The aim of this project is to better understand how we can support emerging maker businesses through development of communities that are not space reliant (non-physical communities).
We want to understand what mix of online and offline provision will enable us to best recreate a tight knit and eclectic community of professional makers without being reliant on location.

We want to design human-centred solutions based on evidenced findings of the key non-space reliant common denominators that make a vibrant group. We are able to develop multiple digital and physical prototypes and concepts aimed at providing/recreating this diverse community in a more distributed way.


Work closely with Business Owners, SMEs, Makerversity team and members to help prioritize users needs, evaluate experiences at different stages of development and be responsible for implementing research and sharing the findings. You must be willing to travel all over the UK to meet makers based in other cities and remote regions to understand their needs and how we could help them.

Analyze user needs, behaviors, attitudes, and research findings into clear insights, actionable recommendations, strategic opportunities, and guiding principles.
Update and maintain prototypes to be used in user testing.
Work closely with UX Designers and other product stakeholders to translate needs into actionable research objectives.

Identify opportunities for continued research, evaluation, and understanding.
Determine appropriate research method based on stakeholder goals, and develop plans for research or testing. Facilitate moderated usability test sessions both in person or remotely.
Setup unmoderated usability studies using remote testing platforms.
Conduct user research across multiple platforms including desktop, native iOS and Android, and responsive web design.
Present findings to stakeholders using compelling deliverables that provide clear results, actionable insights, and recommended next steps.
Develop user personas to guide how we develop new and existing products.
Work with the Business Intelligence team and other product owners to gather and analyze quantitative data, triangulating it with qualitative research findings.

1+ years of work experience in a similar role and user-centric design environment.
Experience in creating and leveraging a wide range of research methods (both qualitative and quantitative) including: remote and in-person moderated usability studies, unmoderated study setup, user interviews, field studies, survey design, competitive research, and heuristic evaluation.
Ability to design and execute end-to-end research projects with little assistance.
Demonstrated expertise in scoping, planning, designing, executing, and analyzing qualitative user research.
Experience in creating and leveraging user personas.
Experience presenting findings to various stakeholders, leveraging research and data to tell a meaningful story about the user and deliver actionable insights.
Experience creating and editing interactive prototypes.
Familiarity with human interface guidelines and how to leverage them to create a cohesive and consistent user experience.
